Q: Help.. thought I understood home networks. Trying to set up my AT is driving my crazy. I am running Win2K Pro with LAN dynamic LAN (IIP & DNS) settings. I use DirecPC 2 way satellite and have a laptop connected to my network. Laptop has to be used at work with dynamic IPs so it has to stay that way. How on earth do I get this AT set up? Any help would be appreciated.
A: First off... You must use a Router. Not a Hub. If you are using any kind of router, like a Linksys or Dlink model, make sure you shut its DHCP server. There can be only 1 DHCP server running on a network. Setting up DHCP in Win2K is pretty simple really. It's the DNS setup that gets tricky!
You may use reservations, which assigns the same IP to each device everytime it connects, based on its MAC. The only trick is to enter the MAC without the hyphens or spaces. Case does not matter. Then each device, server, or workstation obtains all settings automatically.
Of course, you can always just set your AT's IP number to a specific number inside your subnet. For example, 192.168.1.30. Just make sure the first 3 segments match your subnet. Your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.1, unless you have more than 253 devices on your home network!
