Montego DDL - FAQs

Live Stereo Streams to Multichannel Outputs?
The Surround Effects available in our surround-output soundcards can 'spread'
*pre-recorded* stereo audio sources to the analog 5.1 surround outputs. To do
this, enable the Surround Effects and choose a 6 Speaker or 5.1 Surround
output mode. For details, take a look at the product support pages for the
Turtle Beach soundcard product you are using.

==========================================================================
What stereo audio sources can be spread to the surround outputs?

- CD tracks played in your CD/DVD drive
- WMA, MP3, RealAudio and WAV files
- Internet audio streams (RealAudio, Windows Media, etc.)

What stereo audio sources *cannot* be spread to the surround outputs?

- Anything connected to the LINE IN
- Anything connected to the MIC IN
- Anything connected to the S/PDIF IN

Q: What about taking a 'live' incoming stream, such as the analog stereo
output from an external audio player such as a CD/DVD player, TV or Xbox
connected to the Line In on one of our soundcards, and spreading that to
the 5.1 surround outputs?

A: Since these are 'live' streams, the designers of the product tried to
avoid audio latency at all costs. This means that a signal appearing at
the Line In is put through only the barest minimum of processing for
playback. Consequently, if a stereo signal is at the input, a stereo
signal appears at the output. There is no opportunity to insert processing
that would allow 'spreading' the stereo signal to the 5.1 outputs.

Q: Can a stereo PCM data stream appearing at the Digital In be 'spread'
to the analog 5.1 speaker outputs in real time?

A: No, it cannot. Again, in an effort to transfer the signal as cleanly as
possible (as close as possible to 'bit perfect' transfer) no provision
has been made to insert processing necessary to 'spread' the stereo signal
to play back through the analog 5.1 surround speaker outputs.

Once the S/PDIF digital audio data stream is recorded to a WAV, MP3 or
other audio file format, it can be played back through the soundcard's
Effects processor and 'spread' to the analog 5.1 surround outputs.
However, this cannot be accomplished in real time.

The Montego DDL can apply Dolby Digital Live processing, but this must
be played back through the S/PDIF Out to a home theater receiver or 5.1
speaker system with a Dolby Digital decoder built into its input.
