How The Chamber Dungeon Maker In Link’s Awakening Works

September 20, 2019

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening is already one of our must-buy games for 2019. In fact, it’s probably going to be up there for Game of the Year – and that’s thanks in part to the incredible Chamber Dungeon maker. This new mode allows players to experience endless opportunities of adventuring long after the main story has been completed. But what are the Chamber Dungeons and how does it all work? Good questions!

Link’s Awakening – Chamber Dungeons

Dampe will act as your guide through the creation of Chamber Dungeons in Link’s Awakening.

As we touched on in our previous article about how Link’s Awakening is more than just your average remake, the Nintendo Switch version is receiving Chamber Dungeons. These dungeons are a way for players to express their creativity and reward their valiant efforts.

Long-time Zelda players will no doubt remember the downtrodden face of Dampé. This man was once a humble gravekeeper in Kakariko Village but now he’s here to help Link create some dungeons. For your introduction to chamber-making, Dampé gives you a heart-shaped template in which you can lay down tiles.

From this point on, if you want to create your own Chamber Dungeon, you will need to return to Dampé. There’s a whole lot of functionality with these dungeons, as you’ll be unlocking all manner of modifiers and additions as you play through Link’s Awakening.

Dungeon tiles

As you play through the game, Dungeon Chamber tiles will unlock for use.

As you adventure around the main game, completing dungeons and saving the day, you will unlock dungeon tiles. These tiles are what you will be using to create your own challenging dungeons. Completing a main dungeon will unlock all of its dungeon tiles for use in the Dungeon Chambers.

Some of these chambers contain various secrets for you to discover. For instance, one room might require you to kill all the enemies before a set of stairs appears while another utilizes iconic bomb walls.

There are even 2-dimensional rooms where you will need to navigate sideways across the screen like in Super Mario Maker. These act as little sub-areas that allow you to navigate between two distant tiles via a set of stairs. That’s not where the crossovers end, as there are also Boos and Goombas to be found in these dungeons.

Designing the perfect dungeon

The first dungeon players will make is a heart-shaped one, but then things start to get crazy!

Designing the perfect Chamber Dungeon in Link’s Awakening is made accessible for all levels of creativity. Players with no creative bone in their body are given a lot of guidance from Dampé. Some of the directions might include to make a dungeon where players can’t use their sword, which presents some unique challenges.

However, veteran creators will no doubt have a field day. With so many dungeon tiles to unlock, and an endless amount of variations, some truly devious dungeons will no doubt be created. Players can select what boss to put at the end of a dungeon and can even choose where to place minibosses to add some extra challenge.

Amiibo support

Link’s Awakening has Amiibo support, which adds new tiles and allows you to easily transfer your Chamber Dungeons to a friend’s game.

The Chamber Dungeons in Link’s Awakening also include Amiibo support. Any Legend of Zelda Amiibos can be scanned in, unlocking unique chamber tiles for use in creating dungeons. Similarly, the official Link’s Awakening Link Amiibo offers Shadow Link as an enemy to place into the chamber.

Shadow Link is one tough cookie, too. Players should expect him to put up a real challenge. He’ll easily smack you for three hearts while taking a whole lot of hits to take down. Players that are in the early game will need to be extra careful when encountering this particular enemy. But defeating him nets you a nice supply of rupees!

Amiibos also offer an important function: saving and transferring Chamber Dungeons. By tapping an Amiibo, you can save any Chamber Dungeon you have created and take it with you. This allows you to easily challenge your friends to clear your own creations.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening looks to take what the original title offered and update it in bold new ways. The Chamber Dungeons are a great way to extend the gameplay well beyond the conclusion of the story. Hopefully this means Nintendo might consider developing a Zelda Maker similar to Super Mario Maker 2! The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will be available on September 20, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch.

In Cadence of Hyrule, players can take charge of the characters from NecroDancer, or they can play as Link and Zelda from the Nintendo franchise. Brace Yourself Games brought back legendary indie composer Danny Baranowsky to refresh and give that Crypt feel to classic and wonderfully thematic Legend of Zelda tracks.
