Overwatch 2 most recently showcased some of the features coming to their game in the coming months at the annual Blizzcon.
With heroes such as Venture being teased for Season 10, Season 9 will release a long-awaited featured in the form of a competitive rework.
Here’s what we know!
Overwatch 2 Competitive Rework – Release Date
The new system has been announced to be released during the onset of Season 9 of Overwatch 2. At the current time of writing, we’re nearing Season 8, so there isn’t much time between now and then.
Based on seasons usually lasting around a month or two, we can speculate that the competitive rework will be released around February 2024.
Overwatch 2 Competitive Rework – Details
In terms of the actual rework itself, its going to be a complete overhaul of the card system that Blizzard attempted to fix, and will adopt a system that will change after each game.
Meaning players will see how close they are to de-ranking or ranking up after each match, giving them direct feedback into if they’re performing well or not.
Furthermore, players will be able to queue with their friends no matter the rank gap, but will be placed in other lobbies where the rank gaps are the same.
c0ntinue-Tstng on Reddit summed up the changed perfectly, which is listed below.
- New rank: Ultimate: It’s above Grandmaster.
- New Competitive rewards: Emerald weapons.
- New competitive currency: You can purchase gold and Emerald weapons this way.
- Removed average match rank, replaced with Min – Max match range.
- New group matching: Wide groups ( major differences in rank between players) and Narrow Groups (smaller rank differences). Wide groups will match with other wider groups and narrow groups will match with other narrow groups and solo players.
- New competitive progress page.
- Removed the 5 wins 15 losses page, replaced with competitive overview pages for further clarity.

Overwatch 2 Competitive Rework – Rewards
The rank reset is also going to give players a new chance to earn unique rewards, as Blizzard has revealed that we’re now going to be able to earn Emerald camos for our weapons, which will co-incide with our rank rewards.
We’ll be sure to update this page in the near future if there are other announcements about the rank system rework in OW2.
